So this is another of the bars I picked up on a recent jaunt through Whole Foods.  I REALLY enjoyed the White Chocolate Raspberry Bites that I tried — very tasty and they have such a real flavor — so I was looking forward to this bar for breakfast (Hey, I don’t normally eat breakfast, so this is at least a step in the right direction for me.)

Mmm.. chocolate...?

I unwrapped it — and at this point, I’ve started to fight off the two kids.  They see it as chocolate, and thus “MINE” — but they can’t have it due to lactose and soy allergies — which means taste testing will probably start happening more at night because this not sharing thing sucks.
And let’s face it — it looks like it tastes good, eh?  Covered in dark chocolate — it easily looks like something the kids want, and so it looks like something I want, too.
I break it open to take a look inside:
I fought my kids off for this shot.
And yes it looks good.
It passes a sniff test — it sniffs like a brownie, doesn’t have a strong odor of “protein” to it at all.
I have to say, though, that it’s not “crunchy” at all.  Or at least mine did not.  It was very chewy and not at all crunchy.  Perhaps those light things in the picture were supposed to be “curnchies” — I don’t know, but my bar was nothing close to “crunchy.”  Doughy would be an apt description.  (Oh, in reading the ingredients — those light things were supposed to be almonds.  I think I got short-changed!)
It wasn’t bad — just a bad description on the label.  I’ve had worse — don’t get me wrong.  This was not bad in any stretch of the imagination.  It just wasn’t “stand up and sing ‘Oh what a beautiful morning!’” if you know what I mean.  Especially compared to the bites I reviewed last night, this was a let-down by comparison.

Protein blend (calcium caseinate, whey protein isolate, soy protein isolate), glycerin, coating (maltitol, cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, sodium caseinate, dairy oil, soya lecithin, natural flavors, salt), maltitol syrup, cocoa powder, water, ground almonds, soy crisps (soy protein isolate, rice flour, calcium carbonate), canola oil, chocolate liquor, soya lecithin, tricalcium phosphate, natural flavors, salt. Vitamins and Minerals: ascorbic acid, d-alpha tocopherol, niacinamide, zinc oxide, vitamin A palmitate, electrolytic iron, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, copper gluconate, riboflavin, thiamin mononitrate, folic acid, biotin, potassium iodide, vitamin B12.

I do like the nutritional makeup of these — where they add in additional vitamins and nutrients.  Especially if you are using these as a meal replacement bar.  It’s hard enough to get all of your vitamins in as well as protein — so if you can get a little boost in (and no, I’m not saying replace your vitamins with these!) then alls the better!

So while I like the bites, I don’t care for this flavor.  I’ll be looking at other flavors, but won’t be looking at buying this flavor again.  But it is worthy of consideration given the statistics.

Purchased at Whole Foods for 1.69 each.  Also available directly from the company.
