Looks like the regular stuff...

Welcome to Kay’s Naturals! We are dedicated to bringing to you, our customer, better alternatives to traditional snacks and cereals. Made with a better balance of soy protein, fiber, carbohydrates, and good fats, our products are delicious and uniquely satisfying snacks and cereals that can actually help curb the appetite, whether at home, at work, or at play.

After Weight Loss Surgery, or when someone goes on a diet, many times the complaint of “I can’t have my bread, my cereal, my snacks..” comes up.  Thanks to Kay’s, at least cereal and snacks are back on the list in a healthier fashion (and Julian Bakery has the bread covered as well..)  I like products that make me feel less like a surgically-altered freak and more like a normal human.  This is one of them.

1 cup = 1 serving

Now before someone blows a gasket, remember that I’m 5 years out.  My portions are more in line of a normal human.  Take this in account, kay?  If you are early out, adjust appropriately.

A serving is very generous at 1 cup.  Most normal cereals have a serving of 1/2 or even (if you are lucky) 3/4 of a cup.  So score for those of us who need a bit more food to feel full.

Now, rather than drench in milk like normies would, I use Greek yogurt for my “milk” -

Mmmm.

If you’ve not discovered Greek yogurt — especially figuring out how to make the plain, unsweetened versions work for you?  Take the time.  Cause OMG the protein and carb counts are gorgeous.

So 1c of Greek yogurt, a ton of Splenda (yes, I am a Splenda whore — you knew this) and 1c of the Kay’s Natural’s.

By itself, the Kay’s Naturals has a nice vanilla smell.  The taste is very pleasant — sweet, but not sugary sweet like it’s been doused in a sugary coating.  It *could* be eaten dry if you are so inclined (and I have been in the past), but that’s one reason I got fat in the first place so let’s just not go there, eh?  Added to the Greek yogurt, it’s a wonderful counterbalance to the tang of the yogurt.  Sweet and sour at once.

Breakfast of WLS Vitagarten Champions. Or something.

In eating this, you get the crunch of the cereal, the taste of the cereal, and the creaminess of the yogurt.

And it’s filling.  Very filling.  The last bite is literally the last I can eat before it’s the “too much before I explode” stage and that means it will keep me full for awhile.  That’s good for me since it’s hard to do that with my size pouch.  With it being high in protein, it will help to keep my blood sugar stable longer as well.

While these stats say Apple Cinnamon, they are for French Vanilla as well:

Soy protein isolate, yellow corn flour, rice flour, tapioca starch, inulin, pea fiber, natural honey, evaporated cane juice, canola oil, cinnamon powder, vanilla extract, natural flavoring, baking powder, double-acting leavening agents, salt.

Apple Cinnamon Cereal is:

  • Serving size = 1-ounce / 28g
    Servings per container = 1
  • 100 calories per 1-ounce serving / 11 calories from fat
  • 1.5 grams of fat (low fat) / 2% DV
  • 0 saturated fat / 0 trans fats / 0 cholesterol / 0% DV
  • 140mg sodium / 6% DV
  • 15g carbohydrates per 1-ounce serving / 5% DV
  • 3g fiber per 1-ounce serving – a good source of fiber! / 12% DV
  • 3g Sugar
  • 9g lean soy protein* per 1-ounce serving = 32% PROTEIN!
  • Iron 8% DV / Calcium 4% DV / Vitamin A 0% DV / Vitamin C 0% DV
  • Gluten free
  • All natural ingredients

Add in the Oikos:  1c = 130 calories, 0g fat, 9g carbs, 9g sugars, 23g protein

So my breakfast was: 230 calories, 1.5g fat, 24g carbs, 3g fiber, 12g sugars (most being lactose), 32g protein.  Not too shabby.

Compared to even Kashi?

I’m not a carb-o-phobe by any stretch, but many, many, many are and those 30g would scare many people away before adding in the “milk” — so the Kay’s is better for many WLSers in this regard.

I purchased my Kay’s from Netrition.com, but it can be purchased directly from Kay’s by the case in boxes or in individual serving sizes.  A case of 6 boxes from Kay’s runs $30 ($5/box).  A box from Netrition runs $4.99 a box.  Other flavors include Honey Almond and Apple Cinnamon.
