Mix1 – mix berry

Mix Berry

It seems our days have become increasingly packed with events as we juggle family, work, and fitness leaving less time to focus on eating right throughout the day.

There are many nutritional products claiming to deliver amazing benefits but in reality fall short on balanced nutrition. With this in mind, we started mix1 with the following mission: to create the highest quality all-natural products that promote health, wellness and performance through truly functional nutrition.

mix1 products deliver all-natural balanced nutrition with multiple benefits in a convenient way. We use the right balance of ingredients, at efficacious levels, to provide the maximum benefit to your body.

Someone was talking about how great this stuff was, so I looked up the company.  I decided to drop them a line about their product and they sent me a few samples to try.  In no way did they pay me for the review (other than giving me some yummy stuff!) and they did not ask for anything in return.  Well, other than my honest opinion.  I suppose that counts?  And if you’ve been reading me for awhile — honesty is something that I come by fairly easily.

Okay.  So today is another knife-in-the-gut day.  After hour 6 I decided to go for a jog to hope the pain of a good side stitch would help stop the pain elsewhere.  And it worked for awhile.  So anyway.

I come in from a particularly hard jog and decide to try out one of these new RTD protein shakes I have from Mix1.

These are some nice little RTD shakes that are full of antioxidents, fruits and veggie servings — which appeals to me in particular since my stoma does not like fruits and veggies so getting some of the nutrition from them without having to deal with the stuck episodes?  Score!

So first taste?  SMOOTHIE.  Seriously, this is a smoothie.  Really good.  As in — the “I don’t do diets” husband would drink this.  This particular one reminds me of strawberries.. which makes me think even the kids would like it.  I’d ask them, but we’re fighting with them to go to bed and I’d really hate to encourage them to get up out of bed.  It might lead to divorce.  Or me shooting myself in the foot.  Whichever comes first.

Now — here’s the crux — it’s not the best supplement for newer post-ops or for those who dump easily on sugar.  This is 200 calories with 15g of whey isolate, but it uses a great deal of fruit sugars, and as well organic cane sugar (which is the 3rd ingredient, with organic cane juice the 4th ingredient).

Nutritional Facts

Now for many of you, these stats are enough for you to wig out and give it the evil eye.  “Are you serious?  It has SUGAR!  And look at those CARBS!  You’re leading us to the path of destruction!!”  And for many of you, it’s not a good supplement.  But remember that I work out pretty hard and that carbs are not an evil thing.  This is not a horrible thing for me — especially since this was my 3rd protein shake of the day (bringing my total up to 82g so far).  I wouldn’t drink it first thing in the morning when this much sugar could cause a hypoglycemic attack.. but after a bike ride with the kids or a jog at night?  It would be a good thing to help give me some carbs after I’ve killed myself for an hour on the pavement.  Or perhaps even before.  Maybe that would be better.  I should try that.  Maybe tomorrow.  Or whenever.

So, as with all things, you need to evaluate your needs.  Are you an athlete, or are you doing more strenuous exercise that requires more carbs?  If so, then perhaps this would be a good nutritional drink for you.

Mix1 is available in a number of places — online through Amazon, and I’ve even seen it at grocery stores like Kroger.  At Amazon, a 12-pack sells for $25.00, making them just over $2 each.  Really cheap for a RTD protein drink.

I read that the body has enough stored carbs to run a 10k, no problem. Darn, because I’d like more reasons to eat carbs. :)
