Mix1 – blueberry-vanilla

On April 8, 2010, in General Nutrition, Protein, Reviews, by Andrea

It seems our days have become increasingly packed with events as we juggle family, work, and fitness leaving less time to focus on eating right throughout the day.

There are many nutritional products claiming to deliver amazing benefits but in reality fall short on balanced nutrition. With this in mind, we started mix1 with the following mission: to create the highest quality all-natural products that promote health, wellness and performance through truly functional nutrition.

mix1 products deliver all-natural balanced nutrition with multiple benefits in a convenient way. We use the right balance of ingredients, at efficacious levels, to provide the maximum benefit to your body.

Someone was talking about how great this stuff was, so I looked up the company.  I decided to drop them a line about their product and they sent me a few samples to try.  In no way did they pay me for the review (other than giving me some yummy stuff!) and they did not ask for anything in return.  Well, other than my honest opinion.  I suppose that counts?  And if you’ve been reading me for awhile — honesty is something that I come by fairly easily.

So lucky for you, I’m avoiding food right now due to the continual knife-in-gut syndrome I keep having.  So that means more protein-shake reviews.  Yay!  or.  Something.  We’ll go with it.

Did a jog cause that gets my mind off my gut and head and hands and when I came back in I pulled this baby out of the fridge.  And, well, took a picture of it cause that’s the way I do things now.  It’s a sickness I tell you.  And it’s all Beth’s fault.

In any case, this is a nice little smoothie.  It’s not overly sweet — which is nice compared to some of the sickingly sweet protein shakes that some companies make (I understand why — that protein taste is sometimes hard to cover).  It’s thick like a smoothie is — think like something you’d get at “Smoothie King” at the mall or something.  It’s not thin at all.  But it’s not chalky like the Isopure Smoothie I’ve tried.  This one actually has a bit of tartness to it — a bite if you will.  It’s not sour like OMGSOUR but it’s not a sugary-sweet blueberry taste, either.  If you added a bit of sweetness to it, it would taste like liquid blueberry yogurt.  It’s that good.  And yes, the “I don’t do diets” Swede would drink this as well.

It’s good for me — especially right now — because it’s got all sorts of nutrition that I can’t eat right now.  And while we malabsorbers can’t absorb everything we eat and drink, there’s nothing to say we shouldn’t try to make the most out of what we DO eat and drink.

Nutritional Facts

Now again, I know that some people will go nuts over the carb count and the sugar count that’s in this compared to the 15g of protein via high-quality whey isolate.  If you are an easy dumper on sugar (because there is pure sugar.. organic, but it’s real sugar) or on fruit sugars, then this may not be a good choice for you.

However, if you are not an easy dumper, or if you have a need for the extra carbs when you do more strenuous workouts (like I do when I do my jogs.. cause man, that’s hard work..) then you should give these a shot.  In fact, I really like these and will probably keep them after I get through my samples for my post-workout supplement.

Mix1 is available in a number of places — online through Amazon, and I’ve even seen it at grocery stores like Kroger.  At Amazon, a 12-pack sells for $25.00, making them just over $2 each.  Really cheap for a RTD protein drink.

I may give it a try-I’m looking for something tasty to put in the fridge at the stable….it’s a little dusty to want to eat there, but if I’m there for several hours I need a little something.

I had one of these early on post-op, when I was trying all my protein drinks in turn (I am 3 months out) and I truly dumped on it, I had one that was orange or pink in color. I might try it again though as I don’t tend to dump anymore. –
However, I have to say that I definitely remember it tasting great. I love your honest reviews.

@Deb – I think it’s a great meal replacement option — better than a SlimFast ever could dream to be. Less crap to be sure.
@Becky – I try to be honest. I know we all have different tastes, there’s no getting around that, but I can only share what I know to be true.

  4. I love that it’s my fault.
