Comprehensive Metabolic Profile

On April 27, 2010, in Tests, by Andrea

The CMP, or comprehensive metabolic panel, is a series of 14 blood tests which is a pretty routine draw for annual physicals or check-ups.  Over time, it can show some important baselines for basic physiology and can show how WLS changes our physiology in the long-term.  Any changes or abnormal results can direct a physician to order more specific tests.  The CMP provides basic information on kidney function, liver function, and electrolyte and fluid balance.  It is also used to monitor patients of chronic disease such as diabetes or hypertension.

Ranges given are simply given as a point of reference from MY laboratory.  Your lab may use slightly different lab values.  Adapt as necessary.

This is a fasting test.

The following tests are performed as part of the CMP:

Protein coffee and high-protein bread. Lunch!

I made my first order from Julian Bakery and tried the Smart Carb 1 bread not too terribly long ago while trying to find a soy-free bread for my kids (soy is in almost all breads.. really, next time you’re in the bread aisle, take a gander.. then imagine your 2 and 4 year old allergic to it..).  I fell in love with the Smart Carb 1 bread and decided to give this bread a try on my next order.  (For the record, my kids decided on the Manna from Heaven bread.. also low carb at 2 net carbs.  They like it best with a new Jif that’s on the market with no Soy oil in it.)  It should also be noted that my “I don’t do diets” hubby will eat the Smart Carb 1 bread.  I don’t know if it’s ’cause he has no other choice and he’s starving or what.. but my stash is getting decidedly smaller.  I’m not repentant that he is eating healthier bread.

Bifera on sale

On April 27, 2010, in Minerals, by Andrea

Bifera is on sale at Walgreens this week!  Buy one, get one free!

Plus?  There’s still a coupon on their website for $2 off.  That would mean that you could get 2 boxes of Bifera for $18 if your store is picky with coupons, or 2 boxes for $16 if they are not (some are and some aren’t — your mileage will vary).  That’s quite the discount either way.

This is a great alternative to ferrous forms of iron.. and for those STILL waiting for Proferrin, at least you have something to use until then.  2 Bifera have the same amount of heme as one Proferrin.  You still have to follow the iron rules due to the Poly, but it’s still got the great heme in it!

I’ve had great success with heme iron — I have my most recent iron results here.  If you don’t know about my experiment, you can read about that here.

Thanks go to Penney for the heads-up!

High Protein Meal Replacement – 27 Grams Protein!

The Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacement comes in an economic 35-serving Bag with a measured scoop to make accurate dispensing easy. Each 150 to 160 calorie serving provides a full 27 grams of protein, with only 7 grams of carbohydrate (of which 5 grams are fiber, and only 1 gram is sugar) and a half gram of fat. They are also lactose-free to best meet the needs of weight loss surgery patients. One hundred percent of the protein is from a high quality whey protein isolate (There is no soy protein, only a small amount of soy lecithin to mask aftertaste). Fortified with between 15 and 50 percent of the DV for 23 essential vitamins and minerals, this product makes a perfect pre-operative weight loss shake or post-operative meal replacement for bariatric surgery patients. Our meal replacement also comes in a great variety of flavors (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, banana) as well and an unflavored shake that can be mixed with soup, yogurt, fruit or home-purchased flavorings.

I posted before that I went to a WLS Meet and Greet in Savannah last weekend.  I won one of the door prizes, which happened to be a basket of goodies from Bariatric Advantage.  It included a few of their meal replacement shakes, as well as a bag of their new raspberry calcium bites.  In fact, they don’t even know I have their product, so they cannot know that I’m doing a review.  Got it, good.  Kthanxbai.  Oh, wait.  Review first.

something fiber-y

philosophy:

It seems our days have become increasingly packed with events as we juggle family, work, and fitness leaving less time to focus on eating right throughout the day.

There are many nutritional products claiming to deliver amazing benefits but in reality fall short on balanced nutrition. With this in mind, we started mix1 with the following mission: to create the highest quality all-natural products that promote health, wellness and performance through truly functional nutrition.

mix1 products deliver all-natural balanced nutrition with multiple benefits in a convenient way. We use the right balance of ingredients, at efficacious levels, to provide the maximum benefit to your body.

Someone was talking about how great this stuff was, so I looked up the company.  I decided to drop them a line about their product and they sent me a few samples to try.  In no way did they pay me for the review (other than giving me some yummy stuff!) and they did not ask for anything in return.  Well, other than my honest opinion.  I suppose that counts?  And if you’ve been reading me for awhile — honesty is something that I come by fairly easily.

A jog happened tonight, and thus a protein shake is in my future.  I chose this, which isn’t exactly a protein shake, but it’s all good anyway.
