Sugar Management

Mary: The doughnut hut? What’d you do?
Marshall: Eat first.
Mary: You can’t sugar manage me.
Marshall: Then you should have no problem staying surly as you masticate.

From In Plain Sight

This past week has been pretty hard.  In fact, I think we can move beyond “past week” and include a few days beyond that.  A few migraines, stolen bank cards (which have left me very reliant on bank hours), police reports, sick kids, a birthday, planning for trips.. there’s a point in which the stress becomes too much.  Coping becomes paramount.  Exercise can only do so much, and you can only run when you feel well enough to do so.

And yes, I do manage myself with sugar.  It’s a coping mechanism that’s built into us as humans.  Carbs are our comfort foods.  We hone into them as a way to feel good.  They release endorphins into our bloodstream and they make us feel better.

Where I have to be careful is to not let it go on too long, or for too much.

I briefly saw 179lbs on the scale.  Last Tuesday, even.  I was so happy.  And today?  Well, I haven’t checked.  But I’m fairly certain that it’s not 179.

It’s a difficult balance — being “normal” (whatever the hell “normal” is anymore) and being .. me, a surgically altered freak.  And many times I can’t maintain that balance.  I’m either swinging so far over on one side or the other.  But it’s that search for balance that makes the journey worthwhile.  Well.  Most of the time, that is.  This past 10 days don’t count.

It’s not the destination that’s important, after all.  It’s what we learn along the way.

Just a reminder that even this far out, it’s not easy and we all still struggle.

I am a carb whore and a sugar slut.  And I will be until the day I die.  And yes, you will always be able to sugar manage me.  Pliant, even.

Now hand over the doughnut and no one will get hurt.

Honestly, at this point? It really can’t get much worse. Well. I’m missing out on the Las Vegas trip. And I need my bank cards to plan for some future trips.. but honestly, with the law of large numbers, I’ve gotta start winning sometime, right?
