A reminder to check out your surgeon…

On June 25, 2010, in Uncategorized, by Andrea

I REALLY hate it when stories like this come up as a reminder, but there is yet another one.

Larissa from ObesityHelp has been interviewed by a local news station about her ordeal at the hands of a Mexican surgeon doing a Duodenal Switch, and is asking others to pass on the word about this news story so others will have the foresight she ignored.

I’d like to make it clear that not every Mexican surgeon is bad.  But there are a few that I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to go to for fear of their lives.

Larissa’s own words are as follows:

I was warned – again and again. DO NOT GO to Dr Huacuz. But the promise of a cheaper surgery made me stupid. Now, I am paying the price with my health and hopefully not with my life.

Spread the news story, spread my name. Let people know. I will dedicate my life to making sure this doctor never gets to butcher another patient again.

The news story can be viewed here.  Please share it within the WLS community as you see fit.

And remember — being your own advocate happens BEFORE your surgery as well as after.  I don’t think I need to tell you that living post-surgery is required to become a bitch about your vitamins, eh?

oh lordy!. I feel SO bad for her. I can understand the desperation for surgery…anywhere, anyhow, with.anybody…back in 2003, knowing I really wanted a DS, but was SO desperate for getting the weight off and getting my health back, I didn’t want to wait (RNY 2 mths to wait for surgery Vs DS 6 mths waiting list), so went ahead with the RNY. Granted, I wasn’t active online and there were other variables, but looking back, if I had only waited a few more months, I know I would be much better off.

But you know what they say about hind-sight. Let’s hope by going public and getting it out there, Larisa’s situation helps at least one person from going through the same thing
