All too often, we look at the Daily Value of a vitamin’s label to measure the worth, but rarely look at the ingredients list.  Some vitamins are beginning to turn to amino acid chelates as a source for some micronutrients found in vitamins we take each day — sometimes without us knowing they are there.  Some companies boast higher absorption rates with these chelates, while others boast better gastrointestinal tolerance.  Many patients have no clue what a chelate even is, much less the benefits of them.

I’ve had a number of reviews that I’ve been waiting to write up, and just not enough.. well, time.  Between the book writing, the email answering, the kid rearing, the spouse-everything, and the attempts to get back into a gym habit?  Life is busy.  But sometimes it’s just easier to make excuses rather than just doing things.

The Isopure Smoothies aren’t new per se, but their reformulation is.  And it’s great.

Consumer Lab Findings

I just joined Consumer Lab to check out some of the supplements that we take each day.  It’s been interesting.

Some of the ones I’ve found so far -

Tropical Oasis Liquid Calcium Magnesium Orange Flavor – Calories 10, Total Carbohydrates 2 g, Natural Sugars 1.5 g, Calcium Citrate 1200 mg (252 mg elemental), Magnesium Citrate 720 mg, (115 mg elemental), Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) (100 IU), Boron Citrate 750 mcg, Calcium Citrate (21% elemental), Magnesium Citrate (16% elemental); Other Ingredients: Water, fructose, citric acid, natural orange flavor, xanthum gum, and potassium sorbate (as a preservative).

Isotonix Advanced B Complex (powder, 1 capful [3.3 grams], 1 per day)
Found no detectable B-6, only 53.1% of claimed biotin, and 79.5% of claimed folic acid

Kirkland Signature B-100 Hi-Energy Complex (1 delayed release tablet, 1 per day)
Found only 17.9% of claimed B-12

5-hour Energy – Berry (liquid, 1 bottle [2 fl oz - 59 mL], 1/2 to 2 per day)
Found only 75.5% of claimed folic acid
Found More Caffeine Than Expected:
